European Universities Rugby 7s Championship opens in Milan

The Opening Ceremony of the 8th European Universities Rugby 7’s Championship 2017 took place on July 20 at the Giuriati Stadium in Milan, Italy. The Ceremony was attended by participants, local authorities, EUSA representatives, other invited guests and spectators. The event will run until July 23.

The President of CUS Milano Mr Alessandro Castelli welcomed all the teams gathered on the pitch and on the crowded bleachers of the venue. Just after National Anthem of Italy, on behalf of the Organizing Committee, participants were welcomed by Mr Italo Carli, OC Chairman and member of the board of CUS Milano.

Welcomes by the local organisers

EUSA Executive Committee representative Mr Haris Pavletic, Vice President and SCAC Chair at EUC Rugby 2017 welcomed everyone as well, and wished all the teams and participants who came to test their skills and abilities great competitions and all the best. He also thanked the Organizing Committee for all their contributions.

The competition is organized by CUS Milano - the universities sport association representing the eight universities of Milan – and CUSI Lombardia, with contribution of Lombardia region, Metropolitan City of Milan and Municipality of Milan. We are also very proud that the event is supported by Rugby Europe.

Spectators

European University Sports Association (EUSA) is represented by its Executive Committee Member Mr Haris Pavletic and the Technical Delegate is Mr Jack Jacobs, assisted by Mrs Veronika Muelhofer. Ms Matilde Guido joins the EUSA representatives as projects assistant. They work closely with the organisers, making sure that the event runs smoothly and without problems.

Representatives of participating teams

Seven male and five female teams are taking part in the event this year, representing 10 universities from 7 countries.

Rugby Sevens competitions

The title of European Universities Champion is defended by University of Paris 13 for the women category and by Georgian National University SEU for the men category. The host men team of the University of Milan won 2nd place in the last edition of the Championship in Godollo, Hungary, and is ready for a battle for the title of Champions.
