European Universities Futsal Championship 2017 concludes in Corum

The 11th European Universities Futsal Championship concluded on July 17 with the male finals and a closing Ceremony at the Toki Sports Hall in Corum, Turkey. Over 300 participants representing 17 university teams from 10 countries took part in this year’s edition of the event.

The event saw great futsal matches over the last week in both male and female tournament, and the local organisers showed great hospitality and offered excellent conditions for the student athletes who came to Corum to compete and socialise from all over Europe.

Female futsal tournament

In men’s finals, the title of champions went to the team of the University of Beira Interior (POR), who has won a thrilling final match against the university teams of Ivane Javakhashvili Tbilisi State University (GEO). The team of University of Porto (POR) won bronze medal.

Male finals

In women finals, which concluded a day prior, the title of champion went to Moscow Polytechnical University (RUS), with the team of University of Zagreb (CRO) winning silver and University of Munster (GER) bronze.

Medals and awards were presented by the Governor of Corum Mr Necmeddin Kilic, EUSA Honorary President Mr Alberto Gualtieri, President of Turkish University Sports Federation Mr Kemal Tamer, Rector of the Hitit University Mr Metin Alkan, Vice Mayor of Corum Mr Zeki Gul, Corum Province Sports Director Mr Hasim Eger and EUSA Futsal Technical Delegate Mr Tomasz Aftanski. Diplomas were presented as well.

In the special awards; the women’s MVP award was given to Tihana Nemcic, University of Zagreb (CRO), best goalkeeper Ekaterina Redko, Moscow Polytechnical University(RUS) and best scorer award to her teammate Olesya Vorobey. Also the women’s fair play award was won by the Moscow Polytechnical University (RUS). The men’s MVP award was received by Nikoloz Kurtanidze, Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (GEO), title of best goalkeeper by Rafael Rego Abdul, University of Beira Interior (POR) and the best scorer by Muhammet Altunay, Istanbul University (TUR). The men’s fair play award was given to Eftimie Murgu University (ROU).

EUSA representative Mr Gualtieri thanked the organisers and their partners for hosting the event with such passion and expressed his gratitude to the volunteers, and congratulated not only the winners, but all participants for their participation and promotion of fair play and other values university sport represents.

Flag passing

Following the award ceremony, the EUSA flag was passed to Mr Fernando Parente from Portugal, as the next EUSA futsal events will be hosted in Portugal; the next European Universities Futsal Championship will take place in Braga in 2019, and Futsal will be one of the 13 sports included in the European Universities Games Coimbra 2018.
