European Universities Badminton Championship 2017 opens in Ljubljana

The 11th European Universities Badminton Championship 2017 officially opened on June 28 at the Kodeljevo Sport Hall in Ljubljana, Slovenia. After the opening ceremony, the first matches of team competition started.

The opening ceremony was attended by athletes and officials of all the 16 participating university teams from 11 countries.

They were welcomed by the President of the Slovenian University Sports Association Mr Patrik Perosa, the Vice-Mayor of the City of Ljubljana Mr Dejan Crnek and EUSA Executive Committee member Mr Jean-Francois Sautereau.

Also present were EUSA Secretary General Mr Matjaz Pecovnik and Sports Manager Mr Besim Aliti. As the event is being held in Ljubljana, home of the EUSA Office, also the rest of EUSA Staff attended the opening of the Championship.

March pass of the participants

The participating teams presented themselves in the march-pass and the event was officially opened by Mr Crnek on behalf of the City of Ljubljana. Representatives of participants and referees pledged their fair play oath, followed by the official university anthem Gaudeamus Igitur.

Competitions started right afterwards, with team competitions on Wednesday and Thursday, and Individual competitions starting on Saturday. The Championship, which is supported also by Badminton Europe, will conclude with the individual's finals on Monday, July 3.

16 universities participating from 11 countries

The event is organised by the Slovenian University Sports Association (SUSA) and the Sports Association of the University of Ljubljana, supported by the City of Ljubljana, Badminton Association of Slovenia, Students Organisation of the University of Ljubljana, the University of Ljubljana and other local partners.

At this European Universities Championship, European University Sports Association (EUSA) is officially represented by Mr Jean-Francois Sautereau as the EUSA Executive Committee representative and Chair of the SCAC, Mrs Isabelle Jobard as the EUSA Technical Delegate for Badminton, assisted by Mrs Alison Odell.
