European Universities Badminton Championship 2017 concludes

The 11th edition of the European Universities Badminton Championship was held in Ljubljana, Slovenia between June 27 and July 3, 2017. The event concluded with the finals in individual categories, followed by the awarding and closing ceremony.

The Championship was attended by 110 participants, representing 16 university teams from 11 European countries, not only competing for the title of European Universities Champions, but also enjoying opportunities to socialise, explore new cultures, following the fair play and #beactive principles of EUSA.

Female singles competition

European Universities Badminton Championship Ljubljana 2017 was organised by the Sports Association of the University of Ljubljana and the Slovenian University Sports Association, supported by the City of Ljubljana, University of Ljubljana, Students Association of the University of Ljubljana and Badminton Association of Slovenia. Badminton Europe, as the partner of the European University Sports Association supported the event as well.

Doubles competition

Team event, which formed first part of the championship, confirmed the supremacy of Uludag University (TUR) in the EUSA Badminton competitions, managing to defend the title from the previous European Universities Championship (Warsaw 2015), as well as from the last edition of the European Universities Games (Zagreb-Rijeka 2016).

Team medallists

In the individual events, mixed doubles, male doubles, female doubles, male and female singles were played. European Universities Champions in singles categories became:
Mixed doubles: Pawel Pietryja and Aneta Wojtkowska, Opole University (POL)
Men’s doubles: Bruno Carvalho and Tomas Nero, University of Lisbon (POR)
Women’s doubles: Ozge Bayrak & Cemre Fere, Uludag University (TUR)
Men’s singles: Alexander Roovers, University of Duisburg-Essen (GER)
Women’s singles: Neslihan Yigit, Uludag University (TUR)
Special Fair Play Award was also given to the University of Nottingham (GBR).

Medallists Doubles Men

After the final matches in individual categories, the awarding ceremonies started, followed by the closing ceremony. Medals were awarded by the representatives of the European University Sports Association (EUSA) – Executive Committee Member Mr Jean-Francois Sautereau, Technical Delegate Mrs Isabelle Jobard , Assistant Technical Delegate Mrs Alison Odell, President of Slovenian University Sports Association (SUSA) Mr Patrik Perosa and Secretary General of Badminton Association of Slovenia Mr Matevz Srekl.

Thanking the Organisers

At the end of the event, EUSA representative Mr Sautereau thanked the organisers and the volunteers for their efforts and all the participants for attending the event. EUSA flag was then passed to the organiser of next badminton event in EUSA – Ms Marianna Cardoso, representing the Organising Committee of the European Universities Games 2018 in Coimbra, Portugal. The next European Universities Badminton Championship will be organised in Lodz, Poland in 2019.
