EUG2024: thrilling 12th day of competition

For this 12th day of competition, it’s the kick off day for taekwondo and the following competitions of others such as water polo, basketball, handball, badminton, tennis, table tennis, beach volleyball.

The University Sports Hall is hosting the taekwondo competition that started today. The first day of competition was dedicated to the Poomsae tournament which consists of a set patterns of movements that simulate fighting multiple opponents. These sequences help practitioners refine techniques, improve fitness, and develop focus. 

In Debrecen, the day began with the semi-finals of the badminton team competition, featuring mixed doubles, men's singles, and women's singles matches. Badminton was the sport that brought in the medals in the teams competition for the day.

Ultimately, the semi-final matches determined that Gdansk University of Technology (POL) and the University of Strasbourg (FRA) would advance to the finals. The first of the Badminton Awards Ceremony saw the University of Strasbourg (FRA) team secure the gold medal with a dominant performance, winning the match in straight sets, 3:0. Silver medal went around the necks of  Gdansk University of Technology (POL)  while the bronze was awarded to both  University of Miguel Hernandez (ESP) and University of Bordeaux (FRA).

Another busy day of preliminary handball matches featured strong performances from both women's and men's teams at the DESOK and Olah Gabor venues. In the women's competition at DESOK, spectators witnessed a thrilling head-to-head match as the University Palacky Olomouc (CZE) secured the win against last year's Championship winners, Ovidius University (ROU), with a 39 : 22 victory. Simultaneously, the University of Bochum faced Eszterházy Károly Catholic University with the University of Bochum coming out on top by only 3 points. In the men's competition, it was another day of intense play and fierce competition. The Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek (CRO) and University of Zurich (SUI) played an anticipating match, finishing with tight 31:31 result. 

This fast pace was also evident during the tennis competition. We had the opportunity to see the University of Clermont Auvergne (FRA) and Sport University of Cologne (GER) playing in the women's category. We saw the first single relay winning by Clarisse Aussert opposing Isabel Heupgen in 2 sets 0 with the support of their teammates. We could feel the tension of this meeting, the two teams won all the matches of the group. 

It was also the last match of the group stage in water polo, setting the stage for tomorrow's finals phase. All teams gave their best effort to secure additional points, aiming for a favorable position in tomorrow's quarter-finals.

The second day of table tennis was equally intense, with every player striving to advance to the finals. The quarterfinals showcased tense and closely contested matches in both the men's and women's competitions. In the women's quarterfinals, Sofia University and the University of Zagreb secured their spots in the semifinals, along with University of Ljubljana (SLO)  and Lublin University of Technology (POL).

The men's quarterfinals saw equally fierce competition, with   University of Ljubljana (SLO), University of Zagreb (CRO), Zamojski Academy (POL), Sofia University (BUL), Lublin University of Technology (POL), Nisantasi University (TUR), Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (SUI) and University of Vienna (AUT) advancing to tomorrow's semifinals. The finals will take place at 19:00 at Kossuth High School, where the medalists will be decided.

In basketball, the group stage concluded yesterday, making way for the bottom bracket to determine the ranking. The women's competition will rank teams from 9th to 12th place, while the men's competition will rank teams from 9th to 16th place. 

It was heated in the quarter-final of Beach Volleyball that was happening this early evening. In the men's competition, University of Rostock (GER) won against Vytautas Magnus University (LTU).

On the technical side of the EUG2024, the two last General Technical Meetings were held this afternoon for para table tennis and beach handball. These two competitions will start tomorrow.
