EUG2024: the last champions

With this final day, European Universities Games 2024 in Miskolc and Debrecen have come to an end. It has been 15 eventful days full of sports, competition, fair play, team spirit and individual efforts to show what the athletes have been training for.

At the badminton finals held in The Fonix Arena, the audience witnessed thrilling competitions in both singles and doubles events. In the men's doubles, the University of Miguel Hernandez (ESP) faced off against the University of Strasbourg (FRA). The athletes from the University of Strasbourg displayed superior racket skills, securing a decisive 2:0 victory. 

The women's doubles final also featured the University of Strasbourg (FRA), this time against the Gdansk University of Technology (POL). The team from Gdansk University emerged victorious, clinching the gold medal in the EUG 2024. In the mixed doubles final, Gdansk University of Technology (POL) sealed the win against University of Tartu (EST) and title of the best badminton mixed doubles team.

The Men's Singles event concluded with a strong French presence, as the University of Bordeaux (FRA) claimed the gold medal. The silver medal went to Jean Bernard Alex Bongout from the University of Strasbourg (FRA) . Meanwhile the Women’s singles saw Agnes Korosi from Hunagrian University of Sports Science (HUN)  take Gold and Lithuanian athlete Samantha Golubickaite from Vytautas Magnus University (LTU) claim silver. 

The medals were presented by the President of Badminton Europe Mr Sven Serre, who attended and observed the badminton tournament during the European Universities Games 2024. 

On the basketball field the men's teams University of Zagreb (CRO) and Vytautas Magnus University (LTU) confronted each other in the final games. Vytautas Magnus University (LTU) emerged as the champion of basketball at the European Universities Games 2024 in Miskolc, Hungary. The bronze medal was claimed by the University of Seville (ESP).

In the women's basketball competitions, this title belonged to University of University of Bologna (ITA), followed by the silver medal of University of Vienna (AUT). The University of Lyon (FRA) completed the podium, winning the match for the bronze medal.

We also waited until the last day to see who would end up on the podium in the handball competitions. The grand final for men was the match between Stefan cel Mare University of Suceava (ROU)  and University of Duisburg-Essen (GER), concluding these European Universities Games. The University of Stefan cel Mare University of Suceava(ROU) won the gold medal, University of Duisburg-Essen (GER) the silver medal, while the bronze medals were awarded to the University of Zurich  (SUI) .

Individual awards:

The Fair Play Award  - AGH University of Science and Technology from Krakow (POL)

Best Scorer - Marton Szabados (Karoli Gaspar University of Reformed Church)

MVP - Botond Balasz (Stefan cel Mare University of Suceava)

In the women's finals the matches were anticipated and the competitiveness was on such a high level. Fighting for the bronze medal were University of Castilla-La Mancha (ESP) and Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUN) with the Hungarians claiming the bronze by 2 points. For the 1st and 2nd place on the podium, Ovidius University (ROU) and University Palacky Olomouc (CZE) played an amazing match, which resulted with Ovidius University (ROU) winning the gold medal, defending their title from Gold Medalists at the championships last year.

Individual awards:

The Fair Play Award was deservedly awarded to the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. 

MVP - Macacova Monika (University Palacky Olomouc);

Best Scorer - Nele Eckert (University of Bochum) 

The competition was intense in the para table tennis finals across all classes. The final standings saw Maximillian Flint from Loughborough University (GBR) claiming gold, Shae Thakker from the University of Sheffield (GBR) taking silver, and Gevor Geblaryan from the Armenian Institute (ARM) being awarded bronze.

We also had the chance to watch both men and women compete in table tennis finals. With 3:0  Zamojski Academy took the first place in the Men Singles category and won against Nisantasi University which earned silver.  Zamojski University placed twice on the podium, also claiming the Bronze.

First place in the women’s singles competition with 3:2, belonged to the University of Porto, second place was earned by Tallinn University and in joint place the Lublin University of Technology (POL) and University of Ljubljana will bring bronze medals home. 

The Women’s doubles saw Sofia University (BUL) take the gold, the silver awarded The University of Ljubljana (SLO) in second place and in joint third place on the podium stood Vytautas Magnus University(LTU) and University of Zagreb (CRO). 

Staying in the racket competition, there was also a bustling vibe on the courts for the Tennis finals. In the men's competition, University of Zurich (SUI) won the gold medal, followed by German Sport University Cologne (GER) with the silver medal and Kozminski University (POL) winning the bronze medal. 

In the women's competition, gold medal was successfully won by German Sport University Cologne (GER), while the second place and the silver belonged to Paris Dauphine University (FRA). The bronze was won by Turin Polytechnic (ITA). 

Finals of Water Polo took place in Miskolc today. In a very tight match, between two Hungarian Universities - University of Debrecen and Corvinus University of Budapest. Corvinus University of Budapest made its way to the 3rd place and the bronze medal.

Water Polo grand final started right after, with University of Split (CRO) playing a spectacular match and won against University of Budapest Business University (HUN).

Things heated up on the sand where the beach handball finals took place. In the men's competition, University of Malaga took on Hungarian University of Sports Science in the final game and won. University of Zagreb won the game for third place and took home bronze medals.

In the women’s competition the final standings saw the University of Zagreb (CRO) win bronze, Karoli Gaspar University of Reformed Church achieve Silver and University of Malaga crowned gold medalist of the games. 

oIn the women's tournament the invidvidual awards went in the hands of:

MVP- Gaspar Brigita Lovasz (Karoli Gaspar University of Reformed Church); Best Goalkeeper - Lucia Nunez Castellano (University of Malaga); Top Scorrer - Diaz Coppens Malena (Universtiy of Malaga); Fair Play Award - (Karoli Gaspar University of Reformed Church)

In the men's tournament the invididual awards went in the hands of: 

MVP - Pablo Martin Ruiz (University of Malaga); Best Goalkeeper - Borna Kolic (University of Zagreb); Top Scorer - Szalay Zalan (Hungarian University of Sports Science); Fair Play - Karlsruhe University (GER)

This edition of the European Universities Games in Debrecen and Miskolc have showcased one more time the greatness of this event, representing unity of sportsmanship, culture, fairplay and strong goals!
