EUG2024: same goal, different ball

The 11th day of competition at European Universities Games in Miskolc and Debrecen included the continuation of the competition for basketball, handball, badminton, tennis, water polo and volleyball, while it was the first day for table tennis. 

All athletes shared the same goal, to win today's matches, kicking a different type of ball, scoring different points, using different moves. 

Table Tennis had its kick off today, having 38 matches in total, in both the men’s and women’s categories, played on 6 different stations. We had the chance to visit a women’s match played between Azerbaijan Sport Academy (AZE) vs German Sport University Cologne (GER), London School of Economics and Political Science (GBR) vs Armenian State University of Economics (ARM); as well as Albanian University (ALB) vs Suleyman Demirel University (TUR). 

In the men’s competition, we witnessed the competitive spirit among the teams of University of Debrecen (HUN) playing against University of Ljubljana (SLO) ; Zamojski Academy (POL) vs Vytautas Magnus University (LTU), as well as Nisantasi University (TUR) against Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (SUI). Fiery day at the Kossuth High School Hall in Debrecen today, as Table Tennis had a strong kick off at the European Universities Games 2024.

Generali Hall and DVTK are hosting the basketball tournament, which is steadily progressing through the rounds. All teams showcased great skills and strong team spirit, demonstrating solidarity to secure a place in the finals, which will take place on the last day of the Games. It has been very inspiring for everyone in the audience to witness these values through the sport and the performances happening every day. Today, we visited the match played by the University of Valencia and the University of Liege, where Valencia won 64 to 46, dominating throughout the game and finishing second in their group.

Handball was going smoothly on its second day in Debrecen. We saw an excellent performance at the match between University of Bochum (GER) and Ovidius University (ROU), totally dominated by last year's champion of EUSA Handball Championship. 

Later in the day, we attended the anticipating and nail-biting match between University of Zagreb (CRO) and the Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUN) which finished with a tight result in the last second of the match. 

In the men’s competition Esterhazy Karoly Catholic University played against University of Duisburg - Essen, fighting hard for the next step on the scale. The result ended up being 32: 25 for the guys from the German university. 

Same venue was the host for another exciting match between University of Zurich (SUI) and University of Leon (ESP), showcasing great skills and greatly played game. 

The afternoon for Badminton hosted the first quarter finals in the tournament. The six courts in Fonix arena were occupied by the great players of different universities fighting for places going up the scale and reaching the first semi-finals and finals tomorrow. 

The venue of beach volleyball was also busy for the second day of competition. The energy on the court was palpable, with supporters cheering for their team. It was for example the case for the match between Eotvos Lorand University (HUN) and Beykoz University in the men’s competition, where the hungarian supporters were here to support them, who won 2 sets 0. 

As the tennis tournament moves forward, the excitement builds with each passing match. The competition is still underway, with both men's and women's teams vying for victory in singles and doubles relays. 

Water polo had its second day full of splashes and goals. Many points aquired and the teams moving confidentaly up the scale and closer to the title. 

We are slowly coming to the final days of another great edition of the European Universities Games 2024!
