EUG2024: last two sports kick-start

While the end of the European Universities Games 2024 approaches, two competitions just started today: para table tennis and beach handball. Quarter finals took place for basketball, handball, as well as teams semi-finals and finals for table tennis.

The atmosphere and the spirit of competition at the first matches of para table tennis were vibrant. The tournament opened with the matches in the  6-8 category played between Jacob  Wicks (GBR) and Jaiden Calderia (GBR) and Edgar Empis (FRA) and Kamil Kowalski (POL).

In the 9-10 category matches were played between Maximillian Flint (GBR) and Shae Thakker (GBR), as well as between Gevorg Beglaryan (ARM) and Baptiste Guillas (FRA).

The DEAC venue is back in action as the beach handball competition started today for both men’s and women’s university teams.

In the men’s competition, the day started greatly for the Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUN) winning its first match against the German Sport University Cologne (GER). Last year's champions University of Malaga (ESP) had its first win as well, against Ozyegin University (TUR). Will they defend the title this year, too?

In the women’s category the competition started with the matches between Karoli Gaspar University of the Reformed Church (HUN) and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (GER) on court 1 and University of Zagreb (CRO) and German Sport University Cologne (GER) on court 2.

Table Tennis had its team semi-finals and finals today! The bronze medals in the teams competition in the women's category were greatly won by University of Ljubljana (SLO) and Lublin University of Technology (POL).

The thrilling and nail-bitting finals was played between University of Sofia (BUL) and University of Zagreb (CRO). The University of Zagreb dominated and reached the first place on the podium, while the silver medals went to University of Sofia.

In the men’s competition the teams final was played between Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (SUI) and Nisantasi University (TUR), with the Nisantasi team dominating the match and going proudly home with the gold around their necks. Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne took the second place on the podium, followed by University of Vienna (AUT) and Zamojski Academy (POL) on the third place.

For handball there were already quarter final matches today, competing strongly to get closer to the semi-finals and fight for the champions title.

In both women’s and men’s competitions, we followed greatly played matches, with high competition level of playing, athletes giving their best to reach the semi-finals and bring the champions title at home, on the 24th of July.

The result of the day foresees Ovidius University (ROU), Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUN), University Palacky Olomouc (CZE) and University of Castilla-La Mancha (ESP) playing in tommorow's semi-finals in the women's competition, and University of Zurich (SUI), Stefan cel Mare University of Suceava (ROU), University of Duisburg-Essen (GER) and University of Leon (ESP) in the men's competition.

The last combat sport still in competition is taekwondo. This was the place to be today, where more points were scored and new placements up and down the scale were earned. In both men's and women's categories, athletes were showcasing their skills and determination to reach the finals and win medals. Besides the strong competitiveness present, there was also fair play and a great amount of support shown from athlete to athlete, as mentioned also by EUSA President Mr Adam Roczek who was present at the awarding ceremonies.

For the other sports, in Miskolc, it was the day of the quarterfinals. We could feel the tension rising, along with the teams' determination to advance to the next rounds and get closer to the podium. This was particularly evident in tennis, where each team won one game, leaving the competition full of suspense.

In beach volleyball, it was the second day of the quarterfinals, determining the second team to join yesterday's quarterfinal winners. Players are now getting used to the venue after four days of competition, with more supporters joining to follow this exciting event!

In the same vein, the quarterfinals continued today for both men's and women's basketball, where the scores and dunks kept coming.

The last sport we visited today was water polo, filled with action and excitement. It was a duel between the University of Debrecen (HUN) and the University of Pecs (HUN), with Debrecen winning 11 to 9. A 100% Hungarian game created an incredible atmosphere in a country where the sport reigns supreme. We are excited to see the upcoming matches, which promise to be stimulating in the next few days.
