EUG2024: final podiums for two sports, others go to finals

Two of the 9 remaining sports present on the schedule of the European Universities Games 2024, taekwondo and beach volleyball, had their closure today. Tomorrow the 8 left: badminton, handball, basketball, tennis, water polo, para table tennis, and beach handball are going to have their last day of competition.

In Miskolc, the day brought the finals of beach volleyball and taekwondo.

Despite the rain on the beach volleyball court, it didn’t prevent the players from continuing the competition for the last day, with medals at the key. In the men's competition, the University of Vienna (AUT) competed against the University of Klagenfurt (AUT) in the final game and emerged victorious. Vytautas Magnus University (LTU) won the game for third place and took home the bronze medal.

In the women’s competition, Lithuanian Sports University (LTU) defended last year's title of champions again this year in the victorious match against Charles University (CZE) which will go with the silver medals around their necks. The University of Warsaw (POL) won the bronze medal in this competition.

Mathias Seiser (University of Vienna) was named Most Valuable Player in the men's category, while the MVP among women was Gerda Grudzinskaite (Lithuanian Sports University).

We could also spectate another combat sport, taekwondo and all the finals of the Kyorugi tournament from 54kg. The audience was cheering at the top of their lungs today, supporting their favourites on their path to winning the medals.

For the other sports, in Miskolc, it was the day of the semi-finals, and now we know which universities will compete for the title tomorrow!

In Tennis competitions in a highly enthusiastic atmosphere that promises to live up to all expectations. The women’s final will pit German University Sports of Cologne (GER) against Paris Dauphine University (FRA) and for the men’s it will be the University of Zurich (SUI) against German University Sports of Cologne (GER). We look forward to seeing many of you tomorrow to follow these finals, which promise to be impressive.

The basketball semifinals were intense, showcasing exceptional skill and teamwork. In the women's competition, the University of Bologna (ITA) triumphed over the University of Lyon (FRA) with a score of 69 to 64 in a game that was suspenseful until the very end.
In the men's competition, Vytautas Magnus University (LTU) faced off against the University of Seville (ESP), losing 94 to 88. As a result, tomorrow's women's final will see the University of Bologna against the University of Vienna (AUT), while the men's final will feature the University of Zagreb against Vytautas Magnus University.

The last semifinal of today was water polo, featuring three Hungarian universities out of four teams, making it a challenging match for the University of Split. In the end, we will have the chance to follow a Croatian-Hungarian final tomorrow, with Budapest Business University (HUN) facing the University of Split (CRO).

In Debrecen, the day was busy with competitions in badminton, table tennis, para table tennis, beach handball and handball. All of them fought for the last points before the grand finals and ranking matches. 

Handball was in full swing today with semi-final matches. We attended the highly anticipated Women's competition match between the Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUG) and Ovidius University (ROU). Both teams have consistently shown strong performances throughout the competition, ensuring an entertaining watch for spectators. They delivered a competitive game with a close result, finishing 29:20, awarding Ovidius University a place in the Women’s Handball Final. Ovidius University will face the Palacký University Olomouc after their triumph against the University of Castilla-La Mancha.

In the Men's Competition, two thrilling semi-finals saw the University of Zurich (SUI) battle Stefan cel Mare University of Suceava (ROU) and the University of Duisburg-Essen (GER) face off against the University of Leon (ESP). All teams fought with determination for a place in the final. The results will see a face-off between Stefan cel Mare University of Suceava (ROU) and the University of Duisburg-Essen (GER) tomorrow.

Moving to the sand courts in Debrecen, beach handball action continues as strong and determined athletes battle under the sun in both the Women's and Men's Competitions. Today featured thrilling semi-final matches in the Women’s competition and intense quarter-finals in the Men’s competition. In the Women’s competition, we witnessed two exciting semi-final matches. Karoli Gaspar University of the Reformed Church (HUN) faced off against German Sport University Cologne (GER), and the University of Malaga (ESP)  competed against the University of Zagreb (CRO).  The grand final in the women's competition will see Karoli Gaspar University of the Reformed Church (HUN) and the University of Malaga (ESP) fighting for the champion title. 

The Men’s competition saw all four quarter-final matches take place, deciding the fate of the semi-finalists. 

At the badminton courts, a packed day of competition in the Last 16 showcased intense matches in mixed, men's and women's doubles and women's and men’s singles. The quarter-finals concluded with the finalization of the semi-final scheduled for tomorrow. Stay tuned for more exciting action as the semi-finals unfold tomorrow!

The story of table tennis and Para table tennis continued in the city of Debrecen. Following last night’s medal ceremonies for the women’s and men’s team competitions, the doubles and singles competitions carried on with high intensity.

Another competitive round of matches took place today for the Para Table Tennis athletes, showcasing their incredible skill and determination. The results from today's matches set the stage for an exciting conclusion to the competition with tomorrow's finals and awarding ceremony.
