EUG2024: 3x3 Basketball debuts, while other carry on
Today is the official start of the 3x3 Baskeball competition at the European Universities Games 2024, while the other sports continue to roll on!
The first competition day in Debrecen's 3x3 basketball tournament featured thrilling matches in both men's and women's categories. The men's games began with the University of Debrecen (HUN) facing the University of Palacky Olomouc (CZE), with the Czech team winning 16-14. In the women's division, the University of Porto (POR) played against the Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUN), resulting in a 20-14 victory for the Hungarian team.
In the morning we managed to catch some of the 3x3 basketball players and check the satisfaction of them with the start of one of the most popular sports on the program.
Nicolae Bogdan from Polytechnic University of Bucharest said that his favorite moment of his first match was and what surprised him the most: “ For sure it was the ending because we won. I think the organization surprised me the most, because everything is actually on point, not that I was shocked by this, but I’m really happy that we have a good organization for this university event.”
Nikolett Angyal from the Hungarian University of Sports Science said that “It is such a good feeling to represent the university, I am so proud of the team. For us to be here, at this great event, on a high level, it is really an honor.
Later, the University of Ljubljana (SLO) defeated the University of Split (CRO) in the men's category.
In the women's tournament, the match between the Riga Stradins University (LAT) and University of Girona ( ESP) ended in a nail-biting 17-11 win for the Latvian team. The opening day promised an exciting tournament, with intense competition from teams across many different countries.
It is important to remind that the tournament also serve as official Qualifing Tournament for 2024 FISU University World Cup 3×3 Basketball, taking place next November in China.
The second day of the football competition in the men’s category at EUG 2024 was electrifying as the University of Debrecen (HUN), representing one of the current host cities, faced off against the University of Granada (ESP), the future host for EUG 2030. In a high-stakes match filled with anticipation and fervor, Debrecen clinched a thrilling 1-0 victory, igniting the home crowd and setting a powerful tone for the rest of the tournament. This clash of present and future hosts underscored the spirit of the European Universities Games, celebrating both legacy and forthcoming excitement.
The audience went crazy when it came to the women's division, supporting both the Polytechnic University of Hauts-de-France (FRA) and the University of Coimbra (ESP). The day's heated and lively mood was enhanced by the passionate support for both teams.
It is important to remind that the tournament also serve as official Qualifing Tournament for the next FISU University World Cup Football.
In Miskolc, it was the day of judo and the categories from 63kg to 78kg for women, splitted in 3 different categories within, while the men’s competitions involved athletes from 73kg to more than 100kg divided in 4 different categories. The judo finals were incredibly exciting, showcasing intense matches and remarkable skills. Competitors displayed impressive technique and determination, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats. Each bout was filled with suspense and high energy, making the finals an unforgettable highlight of the competition.
The Kickboxing venue was also busy today with the kick off of women’s competition, and also the qualifications were held on the ring. Semi-finals, finals and the Awards Ceremony for Kickboxing Tatami discipline also took place for men and women.
For the chess players it was the last day for the rapid competition. In the mixt tournament, the Azerbaijan State Academy won with 15 points in front of Ozyegin University with 13 points and Armenian Institute with 12 points. For the women's tournament, it's the University of Sports Sciences that won with 12 points following very closed by the Bucharest University of Economy with 11 points and Ozyegin University completed the podium. Tomorrow, for the last day of competition, they will compete in a blitz mode with new round of universities on the podium.
Futsal reached the middle of the competition, excitement peaked with notable games in both the men's and women's categories. In a thrilling women's match, Nova University of Lisbon (POR) faced Rey Juan Carlos University (ESP), with the Spanish team emerging victorious 4-2. The men's category also saw intense action in the afternoon, featuring an exhilarating clash between Eszterhazy Karoly Catholic University (HUN) and the University of Kiel (GER). The day's events showcased the competitive spirit and skill of the participating teams, promising more excitement in the days to come.
Volleyball is striking in the middle of the competition, as well, with strong, anticipating matches held today.
