EUG 2022: Double victory for University of Zagreb

We are at the 10th day of competition today. The 10th day is the kick-off day of badminton and handball, the day of finals for beach handball, the day for round 2 of judo and basketball and quarter finals for football.

The day started with attending the matches of badminton at Zatoka Sportu. Matches were going on all 6 courts; athletes were playing in doubles and singles. The kick off was full of competitive energy and lots of points.

On the other side of town, at Sport Arena, handball had its kick off, too. We had the chance to attend a great match between University of Bordeaux (FRA) and University of Bochum (GER). Strong game and striving for the win was what we have witnessed.

While some sports are having the start of their European Universities Games journey, some play their last matches and try to secure a better position on the podium. Beach handball is the sport that had their finals today. In the women’s finals, the 3rd place belonged to University of Goettingen (GER) while the final for 1 and 2 place was played by University of Zagreb (CRO) and Karoli Gaspar University of the Reformed Church (HUN). The gold medal was won by University of Zagreb (CRO) and the silver went in the hands of Karoli Gaspar University of the Reformed Church (HUN).

In men’s finals, the match between University of Zagreb (CRO) and German Sport University Cologne (GER) finished with the win of University of Zagreb (CRO). The third place on the podium belonged to Ozyegin University (TUR).

There were some special awards also given. Award of Fair play for women belonged to University of Goettingen (GER) and for men to Karlsruhe Institute Technology (GER). Top scorer from the women teams was Barbara Brdovcak from University of Zagreb and from the men teams Kari Klebinger from German Sport University Cologne (GER). Awards for best goalkeeper in women’s category was Lena Dunderovic and in men’s category was Yorick Wolters. Most valuable player from the women was Luca Vajda and from the men was Mateo Budic. 

Quarter finals of football were exciting also. Both women and men teams are fighting their way to the semi-finals, by scoring goals but in the same time playing fair. The match between University of Bordeaux (FRA) and Norwegian School of Economics (NOR) was a great thing to see and a good example of an amazing game.

Basketball arrived at round 2 of the competition. Games are going strong, points are gained, victories are celebrated, and strategies are made.
