EUG 2018 Evaluation visit to Coimbra

EUSA Evaluation Committee Members visited between March 2-5, 2014 Coimbra, Portugal, the candidate city for organisation of the 4rd European Universities Games in 2018. The committee was composed by Mr Adam Roczek, EUSA President, Mr Ivana Erlova and Mr Aitor Canibe Sanchez, Executive Committee Members, Mr Matjaz Pecovnik, Secretary General, Mr Patrik Perosa, Sports Manager and Mr Piotr Marszal, Technical Commission Vice Chair. During the first two days, Evaluation Commission Members Mr Pecovnik, Mr Perosa and Mr Marszal evaluated the technical aspect of the candidature. EUSA delegation visited a number of sports facilities foreseen to host 12 sports on the games program, including the visit to the top multi-sport complex in Coimbra, Dr. Mario Mexia Sports Hall, planned to host the final matches for the team sports.

The representatives of EUSA visited also the Dolce Vita Academy and Epafel Stadium, where they were welcomed by the FC Academica President Jose Eduardo Simoes who presented them the foreseen football venues. The majority of the competitions is foreseen to take place at the University Sports Complex, which planned renovation is to be the main legacy of the project. Beside two sports pavilions, a rugby field, football stadium and tennis centre are located on the spot. The delegation also visited nearby complex foreseen to be used by the organising committee and EUSA for organisational matters and accreditation during the games and checked the accommodation and catering facilities on Students Residences of the University of Coimbra and in number of hotels in Coimbra foreseen to host the participants of the event. EUSA delegates travelled also to the city of Figuera da Foz, coastal city with several beaches and summer facilities, planned to host Beach Volleyball and Table Tennis competitions.

The evaluation visit continued with the official meetings between EUSA and the representatives of the main partners in the project. Mr Adam Roczek, EUSA President, Mr Ivana Erlova and Mr Aitor Canibe Sanchez, Executive Committee Members, were firstly received by Mr Pedro Passos Coelho, Prime Minister of Portugal. The meeting was attended by Mr Joao Gabriel Silva, Rector of University of Coimbra, Mr Manuel Machado, Mayor of Coimbra, Mr Emídio Guerreiro, Secretary of State for Sports and Youth, Mr Luís Marques Guedes, Minister of the Presidency, Ms Filipa Godinho, President of Portugal Academic University Sports Federation (FADU) and Mr Ricardo Morgado, Bidding Commitete Chairman. During the meeting, the Prime Minister and all the bidding partners once again stressed their full support and commitment to EUG 2018 and candidature of Coimbra.

During the next day, EUSA representatives visited the University of Coimbra Rectorate. After a short cultural program, the reception was held by the Rector of the University, Mr Joao Gabriel Silva, who once again presented the main reasons for the candidature. EUSA delegates visited also the historical places of the university like the Chapel and Joanina Library.

Afterwards, the EUSA delegation was received separately by Mr Manuel Machado, the Mayor of Coimbra, Mr Emílio Torrão, the Mayor of Montemor-o-Velho and Mr Joao Ataide, the Mayor of Figueira da Foz. All the mayors assured their full support and cooperation in the realisation of the project.

In the afternoon, the EUSA delegation also visited the headquarters of the Olympic Committee of Portugal where they were received by Mrs. Margarida Dias Ferreira from the board, and also by Mr Humberto Santos, the President of the Portuguese Paralympic Committee. At the end of the visit in her final address to the EUSA representatives, Ms Filipa Godinho, FADU President stressed: "FADU is one of the most active EUSA Member Federations. By organising many EUSA events in the past we have proved our capabilities to organise great events for EUSA. We will do the same in 2018, if the Games are attributed to Coimbra".

EUSA delegation continued with their evaluation visit in Tampere, the second candidate for the organisation of the European Universities Games in 2018. The organisation of the event will be attributed on the next Executive Committee Meeting in Denizli, Turkey on April 5, 2014.
