EUG 2018 Agreement protocol signed

The Portuguese University Sports Federation (FADU) with Coimbra Students’ Union (AAC), the University of Coimbra (UC) and the City Hall of Coimbra signed on November 24 an agreement protocol for the organization of the 2018 European Universities Games (EUG) during a ceremony that took place in the Rectory of the University of Coimbra.

The president of FADU Mr Daniel Monteiro stated that “this moment is very important, not only because of its symbolism, but because it is a step forward to involve the student-athletes with their university and to motivate them to follow both an academic and a sports career successfully”.

The president of AAC Bruno Matias, reinforced the potential that Coimbra’s entities have in the organization on international events and that “EUG 2018 will leave an important legacy among the students, in the city and in Portugal.” AAC will also organize the finals of the national universities championships and the European Universities Martial Arts Championships in Judo, Taekwondo and Karate in 2017.

Mr Manuel Machado, the Mayor of Coimbra, said that “the city is already changing, evolving and becoming more dynamic. We are also candidates to be the European Capital of Sports in 2017.”

The Rector of the University of Coimbra Mr Joao Gabriel Silva remembered those who made part of the bid and renewed his appreciation to them. After that, Mr Silva focused on the importance of the EUG2018 to the University, especially referring to the Faculty of Sciences of Sports and Physical Education. “We are improving our facilities not only because of the Games, but also because it is a very important legacy that will mark this faculty and its students.”

Mr Mario Santos, former president of the Portuguese Canoe Federation and former Head of Portuguese Delegation to the Olympic Games in London 2012 is the Secretary-General and face of the organization of the EUG Coimbra 2018.

The four entities are now on board to continue to work together and diligently prepare the promotion and organization of a great event and to make Coimbra a sports reference in Portugal and in Europe.
