EUG 2016 Evaluation Visit to Coimbra concluded
The evaluation visit to Coimbra, Portugal, related to the EUSA Games 2016 bidding and was led by Mr Adam Roczek, EUSA President together with Mr Ceslovas Garbaliauskas, Executive Committee Member and Mr Matjaz Pecovnik, Secretary General concluded today. The second part of the evaluation of the candidate city for organisation of the 2016 European Universities Games was firstly dedicated to the visits of the sports facilities in Coimbra.
The representatives of EUSA and Bidding Committee visited the Dolce Vita Academy and Epafel Stadium, where they were welcomed by the FC Academica President Jose Eduardo Simoes and trainer Sergio Conceicao to present the foreseen football venues.
Afterwards, the visit to the various sports halls for futsal, handball and basketball was made concluding with the visit of the top multi-sport complex in Coimbra, Dr. Mario Mexia Sports Hall, planned to host the final matches for the mentioned sports.
The delegation also checked the accommodation and catering facilities on Students Residences of the University of Coimbra, ready to receive 3.500 participants for the games in 2016.
In the afternoon, the delegation was received by Mr Luís Manuel Barbosa Marques Leal, the Mayor of Montemor-o-Velho, a nearby city to host the Rowing Competition.
"Montemor-o-Velho hosted the 2010 European Rowing Championships and we would be honoured to welcome the students from all Europe in 2016" the Mayor concluded his presentation and escorted the EUSA representatives to the Rowing Course.
Figueira da Foz, planned to host Beach Volleyball and Volleyball was the next stop of the delegation. The Mayor of Figueira da Foz, Mr Joao Ataide welcomed the EUSA Evaluation Committee Members and assured them full support and cooperation in the realisation of the project. "Figuera da Foz is the second largest city in the district of Coimbra and is a coastal city with several beaches and summer facilities on the Atlantic Ocean coast and students will have perfect conditions" concluded the Mayor.
The Evaluation visit concluded with the working meeting with the Rector and the Vice-Rector of the University of Coimbra, the Mayor of Coimbra, the FADU President and the University of Coimbra Students Union President. In his final address, Mr Roczek, EUSA President thanked the hosts for the hospitality and organisation of the Evaluation Visit.
Before leaving Coimbra, the EUSA representatives also made an interview on the ACC University Radio.
The EUSA representatives will from April 17-19, 2013 visit Zagreb and Rijeka, the second candidate for the organisation of the European Universities Games in 2016.
The organisation of the 2016 event will be attributed on the next Executive Committee Meeting in Ljubljana, Slovenia on June 1, 2013.
