EUC Rowing Zagreb 2024 officially opened at Lake Jarun
The 14th EUSA European Universities Rowing Championship was officially opened on Thursday, August 29, 2024, at Lake Jarun in Zagreb!
This competition will gather almost 400 participants from 68 universities across 17 countries in Europe. Among those representing Croatian universities are athletes from the University of Zagreb, the University of Split, and the Medimurje University of Applied Sciences in Cakovec. Notably, the Loncaric brothers, who recently competed in the Paris Olympic Games, will also be participating.
During the opening ceremony, the assembled athletes and guests were addressed by Jasenka Ostojic, Vice-Rector for Arts, Culture, and Inter-University Cooperation on behalf of the Rector of the University of Zagreb; Kristina Singer, Deputy Head of the City Office for Education, Sports, and Youth of the City of Zagreb; Haris Pavletic, EUSA first vice-president and President of the Croatian Academic Sports Federation (CASF); Kresimir Samija, Director of the Sports Directorate at the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of the Republic of Croatia, representing the Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia, Andrej Plenkovic, and the Minister of Tourism and Sports, Tonci Glavina; and Zeljko Kisic, President of the Croatian Rowing Federation.
In his speech, EUSA first vice-president and CASF President Haris Pavletic emphasized that this competition and Lake Jarun are among "the greatest legacies of university sports in Croatia." He expressed gratitude to everyone involved in the swift organization of this event and for continuing the tradition of rowing at Lake Jarun.
Kresimir Samija highlighted in his address, "University sports are much more than just competition; they embody the spirit of youth and the desire to push one’s own limits. They teach the value of teamwork and dedication—values that last a lifetime."
Following the official speeches, renowned Croatian Olympian Damir Martin, who competed in the 2008 edition of this championship and won a gold medal alongside Valent Sinkovic, shared his experiences in the sport of rowing with the gathered audience.
The competition will take place from August 28 to 31, 2024, at the Jarun regatta course. Croatian students from the University of Zagreb, the University of Split, and the Medimurje University of Applied Sciences in Cakovec will compete in various disciplines, including single sculls, lightweight single sculls, double sculls, lightweight double sculls, quadruple sculls, and eights.
The final races, attended by Martin Sinkovicc, the current Olympic rowing gold medallist and partner of this event, will be held on Saturday, August 31.
EUC Rowing 2024 General Technical Meeting was held on Wednesday August 28 in University of Zagreb Faculty of Kinesiology, at the end of first day of trainings and after the accredtiation took place. Representatives of teams and athletes that are going to compete had the chance to learn more details about the rules, regulations and logistics of the Championship. EUSA was represented by Treasurer Mr Francis Cirianni, Rowing Technical Delegate Mr Girard Lionel, Assistant Technical Delegate Ms Agata Zieleniewska, and Sports Manager Mr Miha Zvan.
