EUC Basketball in Split concludes

The closing ceremony of the 12th European Universities Basketball Championship took place on July 28 at venue where the final matches were played; the BC Split hall. This EUSA event was one of the first major international sports events in Croatia since teh country joined the EU on July 1, 2013.

 

In the women’s finals, the University of Belgrade (SRB) and University of Bochum (GER) challenged each other for the title of the European Universities Basketball Champions. In the final match, the team of the University of Belgrade claimed the title, overpowering their colleagues from Bochum 89:53. In men’s finals, the home team of the University of Split (CRO) also showed supremacy over their opponents – Fatih University (TUR), claiming the title, winning 70:43.

Immediately after the end of the men’s finals the award ceremony when the President of the Organizing Committee Mrs Branka Ramljak together with the EUSA EC representative Mr Romano Isler gave the medals and special artistic awarding trophies to the first three teams in women and men tournament.

All Starts Team - Men

 

After the medals and the trophies were given, the technical delegate Mr Peter George and his assistant Mr Markus Michaelides gave other prizes for the most valuable players Hrvoje Marin from University of Split and Lea Mersch from University of Bochum. A special award for fair play was given to women’s team of University of Bochum and to coach of University of Belgrade men’s team, Mr Predrag Stojančev.

All star men team is: Luka Klarica (University of Split), Marko Boltic (University of Belgrade), Ogun Sevinc (Fatih University), Stipe Tesija (University of Split), Sertac Sanli (Fatih University). All star women team is: Jovana Popovic (University of Belgrade), Lea Mersch (University of Bochum), Maria Martinez (University of Valencia), Brite Thimm (University of Bochum), Dina Sesnic (University of Split).

Following the Award ceremony, the closing ceremony started. Mrs Ramljak came to the floor and gave a short speech. After her Mr Isler also had a short speech in which he thanked everybody and invited all the teams to come to Rotterdam next year for the European Universities Games. At the end he declared the 12th EUC Basketball closed.

Lowering EUSA flag and handing it over to next host

 

After his closing, the EUSA flag was lowered, with the Gaudeamus Igitur playing in the background. The flag was passed to Mr Dragan Marusic, Rector of the University of Primorska, as the next European Universities Basketball Championship will be organised in Koper, Slovenia in 2015.
