Ekaterinburg suspended from hosting FISU World University Games 2023

Ekaterinburg suspended from hosting FISU World University Games 2023

An online meeting of the Executive Committee of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) was held yesterday, making a decision to postpone Ekaterinburg’s hosting rights for the 2023 FISU World University Games.

Among the events previously withdrawn from Russia was the inaugural FISU University World Cup Combat Sports, scheduled for September of this year in Ekaterinburg. The EC approved Samsun in Turkey as a replacement host, with the rescheduled FISU University World Cup Combat Sports now set to take place in 2022.

“FISU has been bringing young people together from around the world in safe and peaceful celebration this year, with the resumption of our FISU World University Championships. And we are more determined than ever to provide even more of these opportunities in the future, in partnership with the host cities to whom we remain deeply grateful,” said Leonz Eder, FISU Acting President.

An EC meeting scheduled in Ekaterinburg later this year will now take place in Brussels on 10-12 November, and the attribution of hosting rights for the FISU World University Games of 2027 will top the agenda.
