European Universities Rugby 7s Championship
Milan, Italy: July 20-23, 2017
The European Universities Rugby 7s Championship 2017 took place in Milan, Italy. This edition of the event hosted over 200 athletes, representing 10 universities, from 7 European countries across the men’s and women’s competitions.
The championship was organised by CUS Milano, the Universities Sport Association representing the eight universities of Milan, along with CUSI Lombardia, in collaboration with the Metropolitan City of Milan, Municipality of Milan and Lombardia Region. The event also enjoyed also the valuable support of Rugby Europe. EUSA was officially represented by the Executive Committee Member Mr Haris Pavletic, and by the EUSA Technical Delegate Mr Jack Jacobs, assisted by Mrs Veronika Muelhofer. The team was also supported by Ms Matilde Guido, EUSA Project Assistant.
In the men’s category, the Georgian National University SEU (GEO) confirmed its supremacy, winning a tight match against the Kuban State University (RUS). In the women’s category, the University of Toulouse III – Paul Sabatier (FRA) conquered the gold, defeating their compatriots from the University of Paris 13 (FRA), who was defending the champion’s title from the last championship.
The Most Valuable Player (MVP) award was assigned to Ioseb Mathiashvili, representing the Georgian National University SEU (GEO) for the men category, whilst in the women’s, it was awarded to Coralie Bertrand, from the University of Toulouse III – Paul Sabatier (FRA). A special Fair Play award was assigned to the Kuban State University (RUS) in the men category, and to University of Milan (ITA) for the women category.
At the conclusion of the event, the EUSA flag was passed to the representative of the Organising Committee of the European Universities Games 2018, which will take place in Coimbra, Portugal, and where Rugby 7s will be one of the sports featured. The next European Universities Rugby 7s Championship will take place in Orleans, France, in 2019.
