European Universities Football Championship
Porto, Portugal: 23-30 July, 2017
The European Universities Football Championship 2017 took place in Porto, Portugal with over 550 athletes participated, forming 27 teams, representing 13 European countries. In this edition, for the first time, the Fair Play Green Card was used, in order to promote and reward Fair Play and good sportsmanship on the field.
The championship was organised by Porto Academic Federation (FAP) and the Portuguese University Sports Academic Federation (FADU), with the support of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF). FAP is one of the biggest sport student association in the country and it has a successfully organised a number of international university sport events, including European Universities Beach Volleyball Championships.
Mr Antonis Petrou, Vice-President of Technical Commission, officially represented the EUSA Executive Committee, along with the EUSA Technical Delegate Mr Andreas Demetriou, assisted by Ms Ourania Foskolou.
In the men’s tournament, the gold was awarded to the Kuban State University (RUS), winning against the University of Lille (FRA). Massive congratulations should be given to the University of Montpellier (FRA), who won the gold medal for the third consecutive time.
In the women’s category, the best scorer award was assigned to Marie–Charlote Leger from the University of Montpellier (FRA), the best player award to Veronika Capoccia from Technical University of Munich (GER), the best goalkeeper award to Noemie Cuberes from University of Montpellier (FRA) and the fair play award was given to the Norwegian School of Economics (NOR) and the University of Innsbruck (AUT). In the men’s category, the best scorer award was assigned to Bastien Palengat from University of Bordeaux (FRA), the best player award to Francisco Gomes from University of Almeria (ESP), the best goalkeeper award to Ulric Cremers from University of Lille (FRA) and the fair play award was given to University of Lille (FRA).
The next European Universities Football Championship will take place in Madrid, Spain, in 2019. Football will also be one of the sports included in the European Universities Games 2018, which will be held in Coimbra, Portugal.
