Celebrating 30th SELL Games in Tartu

From 16th to 18th of May Tartu, Estonia, hosted international student’s sports event SELL Games 2014. During the three days, 1669 participants from 60 different higher education schools participated in 14 different sports events. Altogether 12 countries were represented – furthest delegation came from China, others from Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, Belgium, Germany, Georgia, Slovakia, Sweden, Norway and Estonia. 

 

As expected the biggest amount of participants came from organising country Estonia with 508 participants, second largest from Lithuania with 401 participants and third from Latvia with 326 athletes.

The most successful institution of higher education of SELL Games 2014 was the Lithuanian Sports University who took home 19 gold, 10 silver and 19 bronze medals. The same total number of medals – 48 was won by the University of Tartu who conquered 15 first places, 16 silver and 17 bronze medals. Third most successful university was Riga Technical University with 25 medals.

SELL Games project manager, Pille Tali says that the games were a complete success. “We had everything that is needed to organise a great sports event – happy and active people, good weather along with top-level catering and the best city for organising this kind of event. Sports venues of Tartu offered the best conditions for the athletes to achieve the best results.” Tali says that the organising team of SELL 2014 worked perfectly as well. “The organising team of SELL 2014 worked really hard during the year and from Friday to Sunday athletes made it all amazing. We can all be proud of the games and we are looking forward to next SELL Games.”

SELL Games 2014 were held under the auspices of the Estonian Academic Sports Federation (EASL), under the patronage of the European University Sports Association (EUSA), the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and other partners.

Along with students, the event was attended by several national and international guests. They were all warmly received on behalf of EASL by its President Mr Ants Veetousme and Secretary General Mr Tarmo Jaakson; special receptions were also organised by the Rector of the University of Tartu prof. dr. Volli Kalm and the Mayor of Tartu Mr Urmas Klaas.

Among the international guests were the Presidents of the national university sports associations, EUSA was represented in Tartu by its President Mr Adam Roczek and Secretary General Mr Matjaz Pecovnik and FISU was represented by Mr Oleg Matytsin, FISU and EUSA Vice-President.
