BUCS Nationals 2016 concluded

BUCS Nationals 2016 saw participation increase, records smashed and an array of stellar sporting performances. The largest annual multi-sport competition featured 10 sports: athletics, badminton, boxing, fencing, karate, judo, sport climbing, sport shooting - rifle, swimming and trampolining.

The 2016 BUCS Nationals got off to a blistering start on Friday, February 19, as a world record and two BUCS records fell in the opening four swimming races on day one at Pond’s Forge. World, British and BUCS records have been broken across 10 sports, featuring over 6.000 competitors, hosted the sporty city of Sheffield and organised under the umbrella of the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS).

Competitors list also included London 2012 Paralympic gold medallist Jessica-Jane Applegate, who broke the IPC S14 world record for the 800m freestyle in the first race of the night as the guest swimmer. “I am really pleased to get the world record," said Applegate." I compete in a few 800m events but I am never able to get the world record because they are not IPC registered events so it was really good to come here and be able to claim the world record. It was also great just to come to BUCS and compete because I love the atmosphere because you are surrounded by athletes and supporters that are the same age as you.”
