Big Wednesday in the UK
The first ever BUCS Big Wednesday took place at Leeds Metropolitan University on Wednesday March 20th and featured the Championship final fixtures of 14 team sports.
More than 50 teams travelled to Leeds hoping to conclude their BUCS season with gold as the best university teams in Badminton, Basketball, Indoor Cricket, Fencing, Football, Hockey, Lacrosse, Netball, Rugby League, Squash, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis and Volleyball the country battled it out for title of Champions.
The gold medal of the day went to Durham as they secured their third consecutive Lacrosse Championship defeating Loughborough 21-2. Host’s Leeds Met were cheered on by partisan crowds in two of the final events of the day as they met Worcester in the Basketball Championship final and Loughborough in the Rugby league Championship final. It was Worcester however who secured a hat-trick of BUCS championship titles edging an enthralling encounter 71-62.
The Rugby League was a little more one sided as Leeds Met beat Loughborough 52-10, they have now been crowned champions for eight years running.
As the dust settled on Big Wednesday Loughborough topped the medal table after winning gold in Badminton, Basketball and Swimming, ahead of Cardiff Metropolitan in second and Cambridge in third.
