AZS University Sports Gala 2023
On 24-25 of October, Warsaw has been the centre of events of the AZS community, hosting the University Sports Congress and University Sports Gala, at the POLIN Museum.
The end of October is the traditional moment of the annual summary of the AZS Family, consisted of summarizing sport achievements, while awarding coaches and universities for their outstanding performance. The conclusion of this summary showcased the fact that it was a very good year for AZS, revealing huge potential in their clubs and athletes.
On the 24th of October, the lecture hall of the POLIN Museum was filled with participants of discussion panels during which the importance of the functioning and development of university sports in Poland. The main topics included: sport for people with disabilities, challenges facing modern sport, and cooperation between sports, institutions and business in the academic environment.
Discussions and meetings culminated in Wednesday's University Sports Gala, where during a solemn ceremony in the POLIN Museum auditorium, the greatest successes of student athletes over the last extremely successful months were presented. They shined, among others, members of the Poland University Team, who performed fantastically at this year's Universiade.
In January in Lake Placid, the Polish team won as many as 17 medals, achieving the second best result in the history of winter universiade competitions. In turn, during the Summer Universiade in Chengdu, which took place at the turn of July and August, our representatives broke the record by bringing as many as 43 medals from China. In both cases, this allowed them to take fifth place in the medal classifications
The Univeristy Sports Gala in Warsaw was also an excellent opportunity for other awards. Traditionally, the best universities from the last Polish Universities Championships (AMP) were honoured. This year, the flagship series of AZS events gathered over 18,000 participants (including nearly 8,000 women), taking part in sports battles in 29 disciplines, in which there were 47 classifications for women and men.
The most important distinction once again went to the Gdańsk University of Technology, which won the general classification for the fourth time in a row. In turn, the distinction for winning the AMP medal classification went to the Academy of Physical Education Jerzy Kukuczka in Katowice.
The Event of the Year was the European Universities Rowing Championship in Bydgoszcz, a competition organized by the local AZS University of Kazimierz Wielki and the European University Sports Association (EUSA), during which our students competed and stood on the podium thirteen times. This year's EUC was a success for Polish universities, which have won 38 medals so far. The medalists were awarded during the Gala, as well.
Representatives of the most important institutions appeared in Warsaw and received awards from the Gala organizers. Moreover, thanks were expressed to the sponsors and partners of AZS - PZU, the Ministry of Sport and Tourism, the Ministry of Education and Science, the State Fund for the Rehabilitation of Disabled Persons and the National Institute of Freedom - for their support for university sports in Poland.
