AZS Assembly in Warsaw brings new President

The Polish University Sports Association (AZS) held their Assembly and Congress in Warsaw on June 10 and 11, 2016, electing also the new board. Prof. Tadeusz Slomka has been elected President of AZS and will lead the Polish University Sports Association in the term 2016-2018.

The event took place within the walls of Warsaw University of Technology and the Gromada Hotel, was attended by honorary members of AZS, the outgoing authorities of AZS, representatives of state authorities, rectors of universities in Warsaw, presidents of Polish sports associations, invited guests and above all the delegates of Polish AZS units.

The delegates passed a resolution granting the dignity of new Honorary Member of AZS, accepting the eminent group of honorary members. A resolution on giving the Bronisław Czech medals was also passed, awarding the best student athletes. Also local AZS offices and units received special recognition for their activities on local and international level.

The Congress adopted several resolutions concerning amendments to the Statute of AZS. These concerned the change of the name of the Treasurer to Vice-President Financial and appointment of a new Vice-President for Development.

The solemn ceremony summarized the past term, highlighting the sporting and organizational successes by members of AZS 2014-2016. AZS especially honored Mr Marian Dymalski - elected Vice President of FISU, Mr Adam Roczek - re-elected EUSA President, the authors of "History of AZS" – Mr Ryszard Wryk, Ms Halina Hanusz and Mr Bartłomiej Korpak, and Mr Grzegorz Miedziński - for his contribution to cycling in AZS. Special thanks and congratulations was given to Prof. Marek Rocki. AZS was under his leadership for the last 13 years. The outgoing AZS President, which has recently become the Rector of the School of Economics in Warsaw, received the most important award in our organization - The Golden Griffin of AZS.

On the first day there were also three sessions, during which were discussed the most important current issues concerning our organization in the field of competitive sport, sport for all and the economic problems of our organization. The conclusions reached by the participants of the discussions became the general resolution for the next cadency.

The highlight of the XXVI Congress of AZS was the election of the new board. It is worth to emphases that the number of delegates exceeded 95%, which proves the strong commitment of delegates and their concern for the future of our association. The new president of AZS become Prof. Tadeusz Słomka, Mr Slomka is the Rector of AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow and Chairman of the Conference of Rectors of Polish Technical Universities. In the recent years his university, won twice the general classification of the Polish Academic Championships and this season it is on its way to repeating their success.

In his inaugural speech, the new president highlighted several key areas, which should be the focus of AZS. This acquisition further university program Academic Centers sports training, dissemination in higher education institutions of good practices on academic sport, expansion of cooperation with the Ministry of Science and Higher Education and the Ministry of Sport and Tourism and to increase activities and sports - recreational activities for students.

AZS is the largest sports association in Poland, operating uninterruptedly for over a century and the largest student organization. AZS has more than 40.000 members, including the medalists of the world's biggest sport events.
