After a successful 2015 edition of the 3x3 FISU World University League final held in Xiamen, China, a new format of competition will be implemented in 2016. This year, teams from each continent will battle within their respective territory to qualify for one of the sixteen spots available in both the men's and women's final tournament which will once again be held in Xiamen from October 21-23.

While the 2015 tournament winners will be invited as holding champions, an additional team from the host country will participate in each tournament. The remaining fourteen teams will qualify via a system of continental tournaments and wild cards distributed by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) to four universities per event.
