8th FASU University Games concluded

The 8th FASU Games were held this year between June 26 and July 2 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Hosted by the University of Johannesburg and the Tshwane University of Technology under the umbrella of University Sport South Africa (USSA), the event is organised by the African University Sports Federation (FASU).

For the first time in the FASU history, the participating teams primarily represented their Universities and not national University delegations. 35 Universities from 9 countries, covering 3 regions of Africa were represented in 10 sports during the event.

Athletics at the FASU Games

Athletics, badminton, basketball, basketball 3x3, chess, football, netball, table tennis, tennis and volleyball were the sports on the programme of the All African Games in Johannesburg.

FISU President at the Opening

The colourful opening ceremony was attended by many academic and political authorities and representatives from FASU Executive Committee, as well as from the International University Sports Federation (FISU). FISU president Mr Oleg Matytsin underlined the importance of education and communication through university sport and encouraged the students to play an active role in the society, respecting rules and fair play.

Basketball 3x3

After several interesting days of competition, FASU Games concluded on July 2 with the Closing Ceremony. Tshwane University of Science and Technology won the overall trophy for institutions while South Africa was the champions of the National category. While closing the games, FASU president Mr Ralethe Malumbethe expressed his gratitude to the hosts and all the participants.

The hosts for the next three editions 2018, 2020 and 2022 shall be determined after the official presentation of bids by prospective hosts in September 2016.
