28th Summer Universiade Concluded

With the youthful Closing ceremony, the 28th Summer Universiade came to an official conclusion on July 14, 2015.

Participants of all the countries represented at these World University Games, governed by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), as well as representatives of over 40.000 volunteers and staff were the core of the closing act. The ceremony featured traditional and modern Korean performances and music, as well as international pop and rock shows. With the passing of the FISU flag and extinguishing the flame, the Summer Universiade Gwangju 2015 officially concluded.

Flags of the participating countries

Between July 3 and July 14, Gwangju hosted 10.711 participants, out of which 7.374 were athletes and 3.337 officials, representing 137 countries from all over the world. They were able to compete in 21 sports and take part in several educational, cultural and social activities.

Lightshow symbolised the City of Light

During the twelve-day competition, 31 Universiade Records and two World Records were broken. Athletes from no less than 64 countries are returning home with medals. Most successful were the hosts - Korea, followed by Russia and China. European contingent was well-represented and quite successful at this year's Summer Universiade. 41 EUSA member associations took part and 31 European countries are proud medallists.

Closing remarks and farewell by FISU President

After the Major of Gwangju and the Co-President of the Organising Committee, FISU President Mr Claude-Louis Gallien also held his farewell speech thanking the Organizing Committee and the City of Gwangju for their passion and dedicated work. Afterwards the Korean Prime Minister Mr Hwang Kyo-ahn closed the Universiade and the FISU flag was handed over to Taipei City, the host of the 2017 Summer Universiade.
