2025 World University Games set for Europe
FISU has announced the host cities for both the 2025 Winter and Summer World University Games, as Turin, Italy is attributed with the winter event and Rhine-Ruhr, Germany is attributed with the summer spectacle.
The decision was made by the FISU Executive Committee, and released via a statement on the FISU website.
Turin hosted the FISU Winter University Games in 2007, with organisers delighted to welcome the world’s top student-athletes back to the very same city in 2025.
“Turin will have the honour of hosting this great event in 2025,” said President of CUS Torino Mr Riccardo D'Elicio. “After two years of hard work, I must thank the whole team of CUS Torino. It is an honour and a privilege to have the chance to experience the emotions of the 2007 edition once again.”
Having last hosted the Summer World University Games in 1989, German representatives revealed their pride in being attributed the event in four years’ time.
“We are very happy with the trust placed in us and the decision of FISU, which is of historic importance both for German University Sports and for German Sports as a whole,” said ADH Chairman Mr Joerg Foerster. “We will seize this opportunity and together with our partners we will host this major event and combine sport and science in an exemplary way.”
FISU Acting President Mr Leonz Eder revealed his confidence in both hosts for the 2025 Games.
“We recently had the opportunity to travel to both hosts for some inspection visits,” he said. “I can only say how honoured we are to have two very strong partners to organise our 2025 FISU World University Games. FISU looks forward to the continued cooperation on the road to 2025 and beyond with CUS Torino, ADH and all involved partners.”
Meanwhile, the new dates for the postponed 2021 Summer World University Games have been confirmed following a decision taken by the FISU Executive Committee.
The Games, postponed due to the global pandemic, will now take place in Chengdu, Sichuan Province of China, from June 26-July 7, 2022.
“I am glad we were able to find a suitable date for next year,” said Mr Eder. “The Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games organising committee was ready and operational for the launch of the games this year, but given the current restrictions due to the global pandemic, it was jointly decided that it would be best to postpone the event until a further time when we would be able to conduct the FISU games in the best sports and social conditions.”
