2025 EUSA-NUSA spring online meeting

An online EUSA-NUSA spring online meeting was held on Tuesday, April 15, with over 40 representatives of the national university sports associations from 23 countries attending the event.

After EUSA President Adam Roczek welcomed the participants, the first part of the online event was used to share key information from the European University Sports Association (EUSA) and its Institute.

EUSA Secretary General Matjaz Pecovnik presented the overview, including details on the extraordinary online EUSA general assembly in June, electoral in-person General Assembly in October, attributed championships, projects and other updates.

The second part of the event was focused on new sports and educational activities, with the aim of engaging and activating more participants, as part of the DiscoverU (Discovering university sport and supporting dual career) project, supported by the European Union.

EUSA Sports Coordinator Eszter Gulyas presented the novelties in the programme of the European Universities Championships. These include the Winter Sports (Alpine Skiing, Snowboarding and Snow Volleyball), Padel, and Power Lifting. Padel will be inaugurally featured this summer in Coimbra; Winter Sports will be held again in Val di Zoldo this December, and Power Lifting will transform from a Cup to a Championship in 2027.

EUSA Director of Projects and Policy Andrej Pisl shared some other health enhancing physical activities and initiatives to engage more young people in sport, presenting also the Runners4All - European Students Run, which will be held in October 2025 in Ljubljana.

DiscoverU project partners also shared their new activities on local and national levels. First to present was Marija Panijan from the Croatian Academic Sport Federation (CASF/HASS), presenting the new sports on their programme, as well as UniSport Health initiative, with health-enhancing physical activities and educational programme.

Marianna Pikul from the University Sports Association of Poland (AZS) shared the updates from the Polish universities championships, grassroots sports, cups and leagues, highlighting the new sports, also supported by the DiscoverU project.

Agnes Valcic Valkai from the Hungarian University Sports Federation (HUSF/MEFS) presented the new concept of the MEFOB Festival, Hungary's largest university sports event. MEFOB combines national university championships in several sports, series of recreational sporting events, and other activities.

Activities of the University of Salerno (UNISA) and their cooperation with the University Sports Center (CUS Salerno) was presented by Francis Cirianni. He focused on the new initiative - Erasmus Day, enabling shared experience of sport, promoting inclusivity, cooperation, reinforcing the values of friendship and sportsmanship, linking it also to the upcoming European Universities Games Salerno 2026.

Laura Capranica presented the activities and novelties of the European Student as Athlete (EAS), with the focus on implementing university dual career models and win-win opportunities. Apart of the general awareness and visibility, special programmes and projects were presented, emphasising the importance of a dialogue between the stakeholders and implementation. As part of events and activities, the series of EAS online Cafes on dual career were highlighted, and the EAS annual conference.

The 2025 season of the European Universities Championships will start in June, and will feature, in chronological order: Badminton, Basketball, Water Polo, Beach Sports (Beach Handball and Beach Volleyball), Futsal, Rugby 7s, Handball, Orienteering, Football, Volleyball, Tennis, Padel, 3x3 Basketball, Combat Sports (Judo, Karate, Kickboxing, Taekwondo), Table Tennis, Chess, Rowing, Winter Sports (Alpine Skiing, Snowboarding, Snow Volleyball). Registration for the summer season officially concluded on April 15, but we might accept late entries in certain cases; and the registration for the winter season starts in May. Partners of the DiscoverU project will meet in person at the occasion of the Runners4All - European Students Run and conference as part of the Ljubljana Marathon in October in Ljubljana; both the conference and the run are also open to all other participants.
