2017 Winter Universiade in Almaty opens

On January 29, the 28th Winter Universiade in Almaty, Kazakhstan was officially opened by the President of the country, Mr Nursultan Nazarbayev. In the newly constructed Almaty Arena, the Universiade participants witnessed a wonderful and dazzling show.

The multi-functional arena hosted a magical show, symbolically displaying the sun, which is also one of central elements in Kazakh mythology. Central stage was on the ice rink, a platform in the shape of a petal, symbolising life, youth and love, depicting growth, prosperity and aspiration.

Participants were taken through a journey, exploring the rich history of Kazakhstan. A parade of ancient and traditional costumes of the nation’s past and legends of the country awed the audience.

March pass of participants

After the hoisting of the host nation’s flag and the playing of the national anthem, the delegations took the focus with the traditional March Pass of the participants, accompanied by the beats of the Kazakh deejays. Once the athletes took their seats, the cultural programme kicked off with spectacular video images that coloured the whole arena.

In his opening speech, President Nazarbayev welcomed the athletes and extended the hospitality of the Kazahk people, “Sport is a symbol of peace, friendship, cooperation and goodwill. We welcome all participant of this competition to our hospitable Kazakhstan soil.”

Then the floor was given to the President of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) Mr Oleg Matytsin who thanked and praised the Kazakh hosts, adding that the heritage of the Universiade will be an important factor of stability and well-being of Almaty for many years to come.

After the torch and FISU Flag were brought into the Arena by top Kazakh athletes, it was raised upon the playing of the students anthem Gaudeamus Igitur, followed by the oaths of the athletes and judges.

A day prior to the official Opening Ceremony, FISU staged its traditional press conference, presenting also key numbers and expectations. A record number of participating nations have registered. Between January 29 and February 8, 2017, over 2000 athletes, representing 57 national teams will be able to take part and compete in 12 sports - Alpine Skiing, Biathlon, Cross-Country Skiing, Curling, Figure Skating, Freestyle Skiing, Ice Hockey, Nordic Combined, Short Track, Ski Jumping, Snowboarding and Speed Skating.
