2017 #idus and #beactive celebrations in Europe

The International Day of University Sport (IDUS), proclaimed and endorsed by the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO) and the International University Sports Federation (FISU) was celebrated all around the world on September 20. In Europe, the IDUS celebrations were this year also linked to the European Week of Sport, which takes place between September 23 and 30.

European University Sports Association (EUSA) celebrated the two initiatives by taking part in several events with active participation of the members of the Executive Committee, EUSA Staff, and EUSA events participants. EUSA celebration of IDUS events was supported also by the International University Sports Federation (FISU).



The celebrations of the #idus International Day of University Sport and the #beactive European Week of Sport were also made throughout Europe by EUSA members, universities and students. Here is a short insight to some of the diverse activities throughout Europe:

Austria

The Austrian University Sports Organisation and the Vienna University Sports Organisation celebrated IDUS promoting sport activities as an important component of student everyday life as well as an instrument to overcome any barrier, bringing together all the students despite their religion, ethnicity or beliefs.

A wall of fame celebrated all the golden medals of the past few years and the winners were invited to participate into sports’ demonstrations along with the other students.

Armenia

This year in Armenia IDUS was celebrated by organizing athletics championship in the scope of 18th Armenian national university sport games.

Armenian Student Sports Federation (ARMSSF) was happy to see about 200 athletes of 14 universities participating in the championship.

Belarus

In Minsk, Belarus, sport events were held at various venues within the framework of the national Sport and Health week. From September 20 to September 23, an international tournament in memory of the Honored Master of Sports of the USSR, Vladimir Botvinnik took place in the capital's sports complex "Chizhovka-Arena". This year, boxing competitions that have become traditional are timed to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the Belarusian State University of Physical Culture and the International Student Sport Day.

On September 23, the Battle of the Faculties was held at the stadium of the Belarusian National University. Teams of students showed themselves in mini-football, volleyball, streetball, Quidditch.

Estonian Academic Sports Federation (EASL), with the cooperation of the Estonian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, organised a full day of activities on September 20. The activities involved both the students, volunteers as well as highest political partners and other key stakeholders.

Several sport events were organised in universities throughout Finland to celebrate IDUS by student counties, student unions and students sport clubs and associations. The Finnish Olympic Committee and the University of Jyvaskyla organised seminars on the theme of sports.

France

4000 students participated in the Colour Campus activities organised by the campuses of Dijon and Besancon part of the University of Bourgogne and Franche-Comte.

The students-athletes medallists of Taipei 2017 were invited in Paris by the president of MAIF, which was their main sponsor, to celebrate IDUS.

At the occasion of the 70th German University Rowing Championship, the 400 participants celebrated IDUS.

Budapest University of Technology organised a sport festival to celebrate IDUS in Hungary on 20th September. The day offered the possibility to practice several sports, such as table tennis, tennis, football, sport climbing and many more. Moreover, were organised fitness activities and 5 kilometres run.

The University of Pecs decided to join the IDUS celebrations with their Dragon Boat Regatta.

The Italian champion Filippo Corti wrote an article on the CUSI website to celebrate IDUS and reflect on the importance of sport, telling his experience in the FISU Volunteers Academy, which took place in Kazan earlier this year.

The Lithuania University Sport Association organised the Student Sport Festival, with tournaments of basketball, football and volleyball.

Montenegro celebrated IDUS publishing video contents on its social media page from the Minister of Sport, Minister of Education, President of Montenegro Olympic Committee, as well as famous judoka and karateka. Also, the Montenegro University Sport Association organized at the Mojan Student Adventure Center two-day sports activities (hiking, biking, orienteering, fly fishing, basketball, football, table tennis), workshops on sports and recreation and a day excursion.

The Polish University Sport Association launched an online competition through their social media.

The participants were asked to answer the questions regarding sport through comments and the winners were awarded with a various selection of prizes.

Portugal

Portuguese Academic Sports Association (FADU) organized celebration of IDUS in Coimbra, the capital of European University Sports in 2018, when the European Universities Games come there.

The event promoted among the students and citizens the coming event and raise awareness on the importance of sport as a crucial part of the university career. The celebrations included several sport activities, such as rowing, 3x3 basketball, canoeing and kayaking and it was open to all citizens.

Slovenia

Slovenian University Sports Association together with their members organised a hiking event on Friday, September 22 to Smarna gora, one of the most popular hiking destinations in the capital. Representatives of the European University Sports Association (EUSA) also attended the event.

Similar celebrations were also held in Koper on September 20, with a walk between the coastal cities of Koper and Zusterna, while in Maribor IDUS was promoted during the traditional rollerblading event on September 24.

Campus Soria of University of Valladolid in Spain joined the IDUS celebrations organising several sports events, such as a stand up paddle course and open classes at the university gym.

IDUS was celebrated in Uppsala, Sweden, to highlight the importance of sport in daily student life and the possibility to have a dual career, where sports and educational results are equally important. IDUS was celebrated with several sport activities.

Switzerland

University Sports Organisations of Lucerne, Lausanne, Zurich, Bern and St. Gallen organised special activities for their students and University society, but also for the general public. Team rowing and spinning classes were offered in Lucerne, host of the 2021 Winter Universiade in order to pay special attention to IDUS.

The University of Berne hosted a friendly get-together between exchange students from China, employees of the Chinese Embassy in Switzerland with students from Berne University. They played three different team sports without a final ranking.

The ASVZ also offered special Welcome Days to their students with lots of sport activities. St. Gallen University, also Headquarters of the Swiss University Sport Federation, invited the University Community to practise Yoga in the main hall of the University, to try Lacrosse and to win prizes at a Basketball shooting contest.
