2016 FISU World University Basketball 3x3 League Final

The Finals of the second edition of the World University League Basketball 3x3 was organised in the period of October 21-23, 2016 in Xiamen, China. 3x3 FISU World University League 2016 is run by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), hosted by the Huaqiao University.

During the event, 32 teams (16 men and 16 women) from 23 countries competed for the medals. Europe was represented by nine teams; the male and female gold and silver medallists from the European Universities Games 2016; University of Kragujevac (SRB) and University of Split (CRO) in men, with the Lithuanian Sports University (LTU) and the University of Ljubljana (SLO) in women competition. A few more European teams entered with the wild card - University of Bordeaux (FRA) and Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (SUI) in men, and University of Oxford (GBR), University of Nantes (FRA) and Magnitogorsk State University (RUS) in women competition.

Cultural part of the opening ceremony

The World University League Finals started with the official opening ceremony on October 22. 24 matches were played during the opening day, and the rest of the preliminaries finished the next day, as well as the qualifications of the Men’s Dunk Contest and the Women’s Shoot-out Contest.

All the finals of the team competitions and the individual contests were held on October 23. After two intense days, joys and tears filled the whole Sports Hall after the whistle ending the final matches. Many spectators turned up to see the event, which was also possible to follow live on TV, also on Eurosport.

Matches

The European teams achieved great results, the female winners of Basketball 3x3 at the European Universities Games’ - Lithuanian Sport University (LTU), confirmed their supremacy also in the World University League Finals, and the male gold medallists from the EUSA Games, University of Kragujevac (SRB), won the bronze medal in Xiamen.

“The participants got a lot more than expected, the event was more than a game,” FISU President Mr Oleg Matytsin summarised in his closing speech.
