2015 Winter Universiade Kicks Off

The 27th edition of the Winter Universiade is a little bit special because it takes place in two different countries – in Slovakia and Spain. On January 24, 2015 the Universiade opened in Strbske Pleso, Slovakia, hosting the Nordic Skiing and Biathlon competitions in the first part of the 27th Winter Universiade until February 1. The second part will held in Granada, Spain from February 4 to 14, 2015.

After the traditional march pass of the athletes representing the 31 countries present, FISU President Mr Claude-Louis Gallien addressed the participants, encouraging the participants to dream together and changing the world. The President of Slovak Republic, Mr Andrej Kiska followed Mr Gallien, opening the Winter Universiade. After the official declaration, athletes' oath and lighting the flame, a cultural programme followed, celebrating local traditions and folklore.

Prior to the Opening, the official press conference was held at which the programme was presented, along with the facts that due to technical problems not allowing the Spanish hosts and the city of Granada to host Nordic skiing and biathlon events, these disciplines have been relocated to Strbske Pleso and Osrblie in the Tatra Mountains. For the sports organized in Slovakia, a total of 42 hours of live coverage will be offered in cooperation with Eurosport and other broadcasters. In addition, FISU will offer live broadcasts and daily highlights at www.livefisu.tv.
