2015 Winter Universiade concludes

The 27th Winter Universiade concluded with the closing ceremony following the men's ice hockey final on February 14, 2015. The thrilling final match saw teams of the two nations that will welcome the next Winter Universiades - Kazakhstan (Almaty 2017) and Russia (Krasnoyarsk 2019). Russia won in front of full house with 5,000 spectators, putting it also on top of the medal tally of the Games.

In the closing speech, the President of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) Mr Claude-Louis Gallien started by thanking the organisers, authorities and university. FISU President welcomed the success of the 27th Winter Universiade, which brought together almost 2,400 participants and was the demonstration that such an event could be organized on two sites in two different countries.

FISU flag passing

Part of the Granada Universiade closing event was handing over the FISU flag. The Mayor of Granada Mr José Torres Hurtado handed the flag to FISU President Gallien who passed it to the delegates of the city of Almaty led by the Mayor Mr Akhmetzhan Yessimov and the Minister of Education and Science of Kazakhstan Mr Aslan Sarinzhipov.

Press Conference

At the official FISU press conference which was held a day prior to the closing, on Friday, February 13, the specifics of the 2015 Winter Universiade were explained, being hosted in two parts in two countries – Strbske pleso/Ostrblie (Slovakia) between January 24 and February 1 and Granada (Spain) between February 4 and 14, 2015.

Skiing events

The 2015 Winter Universiade saw 2,362 participants - 392 athletes in Slovakia and 1,180 athletes in Granada, thus a total of 1,572 athletes, 540 universities represented; 42 nations from 5 continents with 20 days of competition (9 in Slovakia, 11 in Spain), 10 training and competition venues and a total of nearly 60,000 spectators. The next – 28th Winter Universiade will be held in the beginning of 2015 in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
